Health Sciences Library will move to Hunton Student Center
May 12, 2026
The VCU Health Sciences Library, 509 N. 12th Street, will move to the Hunton Student Center at 1110 East Broad Street during the 2026-2027 academic year. There has been a health sciences library serving the academic medical campus since 1897. The library opened in its present location in 1932.
Hunton will be renovated to provide student learning and collaboration spaces as well as workspace for library staff.
A firm timeline has not yet been set. It is anticipated that the current location will close for four to six weeks to move materials, furnishings and staff to Hunton. The Health Sciences Library should be fully operational at Hunton by summer 2027.
Throughout the process, all VCU Libraries’ digital resources will be available around the clock for use in classrooms and clinical settings. Reference and research consultation and instruction will be offered virtually.
In early 2027, the majority of the print collection will be relocated to a new offsite storage facility shared with the Library of Virginia. VCU borrowers will be able to request any materials needed after a short period of time.
The library relocation is tied to the planned expansion of the VCU Medical Center. VCU leadership is committed to identifying and providing a permanent space for the Health Sciences Library. According to Associate Dean and Director of the VCU Health Sciences Library Teresa L. Knott: “It will be exciting to plan for a contemporary library space that will meet the needs of future health sciences professional students.”
