Prepare for changes as the Health Sciences Library cleans, packs and moves its collection; physical items circulation ends in December
October 19, 2026
As the VCU Libraries staff prepares to move the collection of the Health Sciences Library, patrons should expect noise and disruption late in the fall semester.
Library services will move to a temporary location in the former Hunton Student Center by summer 2027 and preparations for moving are underway.
Notably, in mid-December, the Health Sciences Library will stop checking out physical items. Nothing in the collection will circulate after this as-yet-undetermined date. Desired items can be requested through Interlibrary Loan.
- In early December through mid-January, contractors will be working in the stacks cleaning and vacuuming books and journals. For the vacuuming, a crew of 10 will work throughout the building and it will be loud. To minimize disruption, most work is planned for after finals and before spring semester starts.
- In mid-January, contractors will begin relocating the 375,000-volume general book and journal collection to offsite storage. This process will continue through June.
- All artifacts and portraits housed in Special Collections and Archives will be moved in December. University Archives and archival materials will be moved starting in April. Carts and boxes will be pushed and carried on the first floor out to the loading dock or waiting trucks on 12th Street.

Overall, patrons should expect noise and disruptions from December 2026 through June 2027. Look for updates on the digital screen in the lobby and on Instagram.
