This moving and construction schedule will be updated as dates and as construction schedules become firm. (Last updated June 30, 2026)
2026
Collections staff prepares the general collections for moving by identifying low-use materials and repairing any damages. VCU Libraries implements a new, highly efficient resource sharing system that provides a unified experience for efficiently requesting items in storage and from other libraries.
Spring 2026
Libraries leadership works with interior designers and architects, firming plans for construction at Cabell and, more urgently, renovation of new temporary library space for the MCV campus.
July-November 2026
In late July in Cabell Library, vendor begins moving materials and shelving on first through fourth floors beginning with the microfiche stations and microform cabinets on the third floor.
June 1, 2026
The Special Collections and Archives Department closes its reading rooms and public services on both Monroe Park and MCV campuses to prepare the collection for moving. The department will reopen in expanded and renovated space in early 2028.
June–December 2026
Special Collections and Archives staff prepares the collection for safekeeping during roof repair and construction and moving to temporary storage. These rare materials will later move to the expanded and renovated department in Cabell Library.
December 2026-April 2027
VCU Health Sciences Library moves its Special Collections to offsite vendors for inspection, remediation and storage until expanded space is ready in Cabell Library. The Health Sciences Library’s general collection is vacuumed and moved to offsite storage. Cabell is relocating select archival collections into temporary storage, with all materials securely wrapped and prepared to ensure their protection throughout the project.
January 2027
New offsite storage center in Henrico County is completed and moving materials begins. This process is expected to take at least 12 months.
Spring/Summer 2027
The Health Sciences Library at 509 N. 12th St. will close to move furniture, materials, equipment and staff to its temporary location in Hunton Hall. The library should be fully operational in the former Hunton Student Center by summer 2027.
January 2027–2028
Cabell Library construction begins on the fourth floor, and roof repairs occur.
Early 2028
Special Collections and Archives department opens in expanded and redesigned space consolidating staff and collections from Cabell Library and the Health Sciences Library.
